Just because Christmas is almost here doesn’t mean the spirit of our favorite holiday, Halloween, has to be put on the back burner. And luckily, “The Witching Season” is a web horror anthology series that delivers on the horror and the spirit of what Halloween is about.
“The Witching Season” is the brain child of writer and director Michael Ballif and the mission is clear. To bring back those nostalgic, scary feelings that the season used to provide through short films. Though each one will be different in it’s content, they will all have a twist to give it a truly Witching Season feel about it.
The first installment, entitled “Killer On The Loose”, is an homage to slasher films of the past, but with the added bonus of being set around Halloween. And it’s a great way to kick off the series. The film builds tension, has the jump scares to make you scream (I personally love those), and features one of my favorite zombie films playing in the background during one scene to give it an even more creepy feel to it.
The second installment of “The Witching Season” freaks me out because it features a house, a child, and something evil and horrifying living in the basement of the house. Anytime you add a child to the mix, things are bound to turn the fear factor up a notch or two and “Princess” doesn’t fail to deliver on that promise.
Not only are the short films featured in “The Witching Season” terrifying, they’re well acted and shot beautifully. The lower budget look is almost completely absent and you can tell the cast and crew put a lot of attention, detail, and hard work into what they were making. In other words, PASSION for the genre is heavily evident when you watch.
Below is the official synopsis for “The Witching Season” followed by a teaser trailer for what to expect. Enjoy!
“Each year, as summer comes to an end, the Witching Season begins. Trees shake their leaves and the air begins to crisp. Cities and neighborhoods develop a certain eeriness as images of witches, ghouls, goblins, and skeletons begin appearing in every direction. There is a smell in the air that only exists for a brief moment in time. This is what The Witching Season is about — the nostalgia and atmosphere of the Halloween season.
The Witching Season is a new anthology of short horror films, presented on YouTube as a free web series. Inspired by anthology shows such as “Tales From The Crypt”, “The Twilight Zone”, and “Are You Afraid Of The Dark?”, The Witching Season delivers originally produced tales of terror, all set during the Halloween season. Fueled nostalgia, the series pays special attention to the spirit of Halloween and reminds us of the magic that exists during this special time of year.”
